Before Diana, Janet, Beyonce, Rihanna, Keri and numerous others; there was Josephine. Born as Freda Josephine McDonald, today would have been Josephine Baker’s 108th birthday. The pioneering diva fought for equality on and off stages during her lifetime. Baker refused to perform in front of segregated audiences which led to the breaking of color barriers at many establishments. Off stage she was an avid supporter of the Civil Rights Movement. She even spoke at the March on Washington alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr in 1963.

Take a peek at some of the iconic legend’s performances, and peep where some of our favorite divas of today got their inspirations.
