Women’s History Month: Queen Latifah

March is Women’s History Month and was started in 1981 as “Women’s History Week.” It later officially became a month long celebration in 1995. Join Vibin’ Courtside during the entire month of March as we celebrate just a few of the women who are currently doing the dang thing!

Today is Queen Latifah’s Birthday. There really isn’t much that can be said about Queen and her 26-year career, that hasn’t already been said at this point. She’s just dope. No other word better describes the hip hop pioneer. And she just keeps doing dope things. Since her classic debut album All Hail the Queen dropped in 1989, Queen has made nothing but major moves. She has thus far conquered movie, television and of course music. But if you’d like a rundown, check out this piece about some of Queen’s hustles.

“When I was around 18, I looked in the mirror and said, ‘You’re either going to love yourself or hate yourself.’ And I decided to love myself. That changed a lot of things.”

Queen’s next move is Dee Ree’s biopic Bessie that is set to premiere on May 16th on HBO. She will portray the legendary and iconic Blues singer Bessie Smith. Check out the awesome trailer below!

Happy Birthday, Queen!
